Authors: Coleen Moore and Colleen Moore
Average review score:

An ideal guide for the beginner.
The Newbies' Money Guide ins an exceptionally well written and presented guide to personal wealth and economic security specifically designed for readers who have not yet started their personal financial planning and are unfamiliar with the basic steps to securing, saving, and investing money. Author Coleen Moore brings a "real world" practicality to her series of simple steps she has devised for the novice money manager. The Newbies' Money Guide shows how to find the money to save and to invest; how to invest safely and build wealth through "catch up" investment strategies; protect your monetary resources from financial ruin; end unnecessary debt and counter emotional "money blocks". The Newbies' Money Guide is an ideal guide for the beginner and essential reading for anyone who has come to a realization that their current financial arrangements are simply inadequate for achieving their life goals and/or comfortable retirement.

She did it.
We know the author! She really cares about people and that is why she wrote this book. She wants everyone to be debt free and financially secure. She is funny, compassionate and sincere, heck, she even gives out her telephone number. We appreciated the inclusion of the chapters on the E.Ts(emotional troubles) and how not to ruin your children's life, rarely discussed in a financial book. This book can change your life!

No Shitting in the Toilet: The Travel Guide for When You'Ve Really Lost It
Published in Paperback by Bantam Pr Ltd (February, 2003)
Author: Peter Moore
Average review score:

Never have I read a book this quick
Sarcastic, hilarious but at times practical peice of work. Some of Moore's findings provided warning/tips during my own trips. Others stirred up my curiousity and provided ideas/reasons to visit the places I've never been interested before. Hard to stop once you start reading!

In-depth, valuable information packaged in wit
I have picked up all of Peter Moore's books during my travels to Australia, and read them all. He has covered a lot of territory in great depth during his wanderings -- much of it backwater, unstable or just plain shady. This particular book is really advice, guidance and recommendations to mentally prepare you for adventurous travel. It is thorough, well written and witty. Even if you have no plans to visit some of the lands he describes, it is just plain interesting reading. It also gives you a sense of how extensively and frequently he's traveled. His writing style is direct, to the point and intelligent -- more descriptive/observational rather than ruminating about feelings/emotions ad nauseum. I hope for the sake of US readers that the rest of his books (The Wrong Way Home, Montezuma's Revenge, Swahili for the Broken Hearted) become available in this market.

The title says it all
I discovered Peter Moore's books while travelling in Australia earlier this year and have been searching for the rest of the collection since returning to the US. It is fantastic that we can finally get at least one of his titles here in the States. NSITT is a hysterical account of all the horrible things that can happen to you while travelling and that ultimately make your trip worthwhile and memorable. It is an absolute must-read for the travel junkie (and/or for the travel literature junkie). The style is such that you can open the book to any page, read a top ten list, and then rush to your computer to scour the internet for a ticket to anywhere promising uncertain adventure. Or you may be grateful that you are safe at home, dysentary free, and living vacariously via someone's else's fortune (misfortune?). Either way, this book will leave you in stiches.

Restoring the Dream: The Bold New Plan by House Republicans
Published in Paperback by Times Books (May, 1995)
Authors: Stephen Moore, Armey Dick, Gingrich Newt, Newt Gingrich, and Dick Armey
Average review score:

Beyond the Contract....
"Restoring the Dream" goes far beyond its predecessor, "Contract With America." It talks in-depth about the accomplishments and minor failures of the then new Congress, and how the Clinton Administration will handle the bills passed by Congress. Each bill, representing the ten points outlined in "Contract With America," is followed with a detailed summary of why Congress believes the given bill is needed. Of some interest is, term limits, the Presidential line item veto, the Taking Back Our Streets Act, and the need for National Missile Defense. In an almost "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"-esque style, Newt Gingrich went to Washington to take down the bad guys, bureaucrats. We all know their kind. Those who spend years upon years walking the corridors of the Capitol Building, out of touch with their voters and hometown, and seeing every event in a political sense. They are greedy, self-serving opportunists with no regard for the rest of America. The only solution to ridding Congress of these people is through term limits. "Restoring the Dream" talks of why Representatives should be limited to 4 terms in the House, and why Senators should be limited to 2 terms in the Senate. Interestingly enough, Congressional Republicans felt strongly about enacting a Presidential line item veto, even with a completely incompetent President, Bill Clinton. They knew it was in the best interest of the country and for the progress of democracy to quickly enact such legislation. They did. For those not acquainted with the concept of line item veto, it is when the President gives a warm reception to a bill passed by Congress, but finds one minor flaw and ends up having to veto the entire bill. With line item veto power, a President can veto certain mandates in a given bill, but still pass the bill in its modified form. This means more can get done for the people of America, and less partisan bickering on Capitol Hill. Urban areas have been deteriorating rapidly sense Lyndon B. Johnson's proclamation of his "Great Society" in the mid 1960s. Murders, drugs, gangs, and robberies have become all too common in America's largest cities. The Taking Back Our Streets Act addresses such concerns. Children must be taught at an early age that they are responsible for their behavior and punishments do follow for inappropriate or violent behavior. They need to grasp the American Dream and understand that they too, can contribute a great deal to society. Without such education, violence in our urban areas is inevitable. The Taking Back Our Streets Act stops crime in our cities dead in its tracks. Iraq, Iran, North Korea, and Sudan are just some nations attempting to obtain or already possessing nuclear missiles. The threat grows rapidly with each passing day, and the US currently has no system to protect its soil from a nuclear attack. National Missile Defense is a must for the modern and unpredictable world that we live in. The legislation mentioned in this book became the National Missile Defense Act of 1999, passed by both chambers of Congress, and signed into law by President Clinton.

Continuing the Contract's legacy
Even thought this book is five years old, it's intriguing to see how the plan by the House Republicans actually came to be and how successful it was in transforming America. Their main objective was to improve conditions for families, create an opportunity society, and balance the budget. In my opinion, they succeeded at all three, and then some. Through emphasizing personal responsibility, trusting the individual, and placing power back in the hands of state and local authorities did the Republicans promote their message that large, inefficient government was useless and harmful and that decentralization truly epitomizes compassionate conservatism. Now that we have a balanced budget, welfare reform, lower crime, and booming economy, the GOP can take credit for the work they performed to make these unattainable goals during Democrat-run Congresses a reality. These men and women proved that lower taxation, deregulation, limited government, and faith in the local community can make the American dream possible.

Phase II of the Bold Plan to Take on the D.C. Establishment
I didn't used to believe the rhetoric leveled against President Clinton regarding his "borrowing" of conservative issues for political gain. But now I understand where such accusations come from. This book was written in 1995, after the new Republican Majority (104th Congress) finished its first 100 days of marathon legislation in order to fulfill its Contract With America (documented in another book). Restoring the Dream is an outline of the next steps in the Republican Plan to remake Government. The book begins by enumerating the success of the first 100 days of the Contract and devotes the remainder of the book to elaborating on new pledges for further reform. To say that such a plan is (was) bold would be an understatement. I have gained new respect for the Republican Party after reading this book and it has called into question the common conservative stereotypes. Unless this book is a cruel hoax and I'm a dupe, I believe that the Republican Party genuinely wishes to ensure that all Americans have an equal opportunity to succeed and to achieve the American Dream. In retrospect, it is a shame that Republicans were demonized and maligned by the establishment, having to endure accusations that simply do not coincide with the proposals outlined in this book. And while this book is certainly "dated" by now, it is instructive to see how much the Republicans have actually delivered on their pledges and promises - especially on welfare reform and a balanced budget. I recommend this book to every American interested in understanding the forces that are shaping America's future.

Schrödinger : Life and Thought
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (August, 1989)
Author: Walter J. Moore
Average review score:

Scientific and sexual fireworks.
This is a masterful biography, but one need to have a profound knowledge of higher mathematics and a basic one in physics to fully understand it.

Walter Moore shows that Schrödinger's life and thought was at least controversial.

Life
Schrödinger's personal itinerary is exemplary for the 20th century. He was born in a comfortable upper-middle class, but his parents lost their savings in the German inflation after WW I. The result was famine and diseases. It marked the rest of his life. As a young man he was confronted with unemployment and nearly left physics for financial reasons!
He found a decent job only at the age of 34. Even after winning the Nobel Prize he was still confronted with 'pension' problems.

Science
Walter Moore gives us a magisterial and detailed analysis of the scientific discoveries of ES, from his humble beginnings to the elaboration of the quantum wave function and after.
It shows that ES was above all a mathematical genius and a not so brilliant experimenter.
ES remained all his life opposed to the complemantary (particle/wave) interpretation of quantum mechanics (the 'Kopenhagen oracle' for ES). For him, there were only waves!

Sex
Beside science, sex was the principal occupation of his life, with all combinations imaginable. He lived a ménage à trois and sometimes à quatre, but still fell in love with other women, also with very young ones for he had a Lolita complex. He could without doubt have been accused of paedophilia.
But his intense love affairs stimulated highly his scientific creativity.
One can only wonder if his 'wild' behaviour and negative view of bourgeois marriage were not fundamentally influenced by the fact that he couldn't marry his first true love, because her family found that he was too poor!

Politics
He had a deep contempt for the governing classes (politicians, clergy) who 'enslave men by violence and use the religious desire of many people to promote superstition to rule over the dispossessed'. He also distrusted democracy!

Philosophical world view
This is certainly one of the strangest aspects of his thoughts.
He was convinced that physics provided absolutely no answers to philosophical questions (e. g. free will). All his life he remained, like Einstein, an adept of determinism.
His philosophical views and ethical principles were completely dissociated from his real life!
As an adept of the Vedanta, he believed the Buddhist wisdom that a thing could be both A and non-A (horribile dictu)!
He was also heavily influenced by the philosophy of Schopenhauer.

This work gives excellent explanations of the Vedanta, and the philosophy of Mach and Schopenhauer.
It contains a very painful paragraph on Heidegger.

I see only one minus point: the author doesn't give Bohr's pertinent response to the EPR-article against the Copenhagen interpretation of qm.

This is a brilliant book and certainly the definitive biography of Schrödinger. It is by no means a hagiography and doesn't dodge some 'weird' aspects of Schrödinger's life.
Not to be missed.

....WOW
This book, is amazing. I came across it because I was forced to do a project for chemistry on Erwin Schrödinger, and I'm glad I did. It's a 512 page biography of him, and I think that says it all. It covers and extensive amount of ground, and is very useful for anyone doing any researh on the man. It gives a lot of background information about what was going on in his life, and the events in the world around him. Whenever he went to a new college, there was always some information on the college itself. If Schrödinger did research on a topic, there would be a small history on the scientist that came before him and how they affected him. The book is virtually packed with quotes form other people, letters, and speeches. One of the other things I liked was that it contained details of Schrödinger's personal life, such as his extramarital affairs and details on his marriage, and his family history. Want to see some pictures? There's that too. Bet you didn't know that Schrödinger wrote poetry. Well he did, and all of it is here too, in both German and an English translation. Another thing that makes the book stand out it that it is bery readable. Walter Moore did an excellent job writing the book, and it shows. I can say that you only need to read one book about Schrödinger: this one.

I tawt I taw a putty tat!
The 20th century has boasted a greater number of top-notch physicists than any prior epoch in history. The 21st century, and any future century beyond it, will be hard-pressed to match the level of scientific genius presented by the 20th. Names such as John Archibald Wheeler, Eugene Wigner, Paul Dirac, Max Planck, Louis deBroglie, Werner Heisenberg, Niels Bohr, Albert Einstein, Wolfgang Pauli, John von Neumann, Richard Feynman, Roger Penrose, Freeman Dyson and Stephen Hawking have set the standard for scientific and intellectual excellence.

Another name which belongs in this esteemed list is that of Erwin Schroedinger. Schroedinger influenced the field of quantum mechanics perhaps more than any other single scientific contributor of modern times. Here, Walter Moore has compiled his unique story so that all may have access to the life and times of this extraordinary man.

Moore's writing style is easily up to the task of keeping the interest of the reader. He does an excellent job of tracing Schroedinger's academic career as he obtained posts at the university of Jena, university of Zurich, university of Berlin [he was the hand-picked successor of none other than Max Planck], university of Oxford, university of Graz (Austria), the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and the university of Vienna. Schroedinger was also offered professorships at 2 US universities as well (university of Wisconsin, Madison and Princeton university), but declined both. Moore does an exquisite job in his disinterment of all the facts, personal factors and politics behind S' decisions to transfer (or not to transfer) from post to post. Moore's elucidation of S' relationship with the Nazis (who called him "Politically unreliable") is exemplery, as is his coverage of the friendships and correspondence that S shared with his peers.

What makes Moore's biography superb is that he equally concentrates on S' personal life as well as his intellectual endeavors. Moore gives an authentic and upfront treatment of S' rather bizarre love arrangements. Like the composer Richard Wagner, S had many affairs with the wives of his friends (a few of which resulted in children), as well as myriad young woman just reaching adulthood. Moore offers a credible psycho-analysis of the motivations for his sexual conquests, and comparisons to the behavior of the persona in Nabokov's "Lolita" which Moore alludes to are certainly warranted.

Like all good modern biographies, the book is filled with plenty of pictures of the personages and locales which were integrated within S' life [including the immortal assemblage of the 1927 (5th) Solvay conference]. Also, for the mathematically inclined amongst us, the work is filled with a good many of the equations that S developed and worked on during his lifetime. The good news, for those of us not so mathematically inclined, is that an understanding of them is not essential to a generic comprehension of what S accomplished.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for all fans of and admirers of this great individual. People who have an interest in the history of science, physics in the 20th century, the philosophy of science and the psychology of the genius will also gain a great deal by reading this biographical treatise. Einstein once wrote S that "...you are my closest brother and your brain runs so similarly to mine" (p 426). This is a splendid illustration of just how pivotal he was to the history of science. In this biography, Moore set out to tell his story. HE DID!! HE DID!!

Sing a Song of Popcorn

Authors: Beatrice Schenk de Regniers and Eva Moore
Average review score:

A great addition of any bookshelf
This marriage of poetry and illustrations is like no other. As an educator I enjoy the layout of the book. The poems are divided into categories such as poems about weather, spooky poems, and animal poems. The illustrations are by Caldecott Medal artists - the best of the best! I have purchased countless copies of Sing a Song of Popcorn as it is a perfect gift to give to families to celebrate the arrival of a new baby. It is a book that all members of the family can enjoy - the young ones will enjoy the rhyming patterns of some of the poems and the silliness of others. The adults will treasure the inclusion of such classic poems as Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" and Jack Prelutsky's entertaining "The Spaghetti Nut".

Collection of fantastic poems
You don't have to be a certain age to enjoy this book, full of wonderful poems from various well known poets. There is a poem for every walk of life in this book. This book is sure to be on your shelf for many years to come!

An excellent resource for elementary teachers :)
I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of poetry and the beautiful illustrations which accompany. As a kindergarten teacher, I found the anthology to be an invaluable resource for introducing young children (or any children) to the world of poetry. :

A goldmine of hard-to-find engineering data!
Dennis Moore has really done his homework on this and it's companion book on big block performance. The kind of detailed information provided in each of his books is very hard to find, and Dennis explains the performance significance of each step of the engine's assembly. I've been a professional engine builder for many years, and I'll definitely read these one more than once! A must-have for the marine small-block owner/builder.

Well worth your investment!
Since I now have my own copy, I can tell the world that this book is well underpriced!! The content of this book is so well written, easy to read, and chocked full of "experience and information", that it is easily worth more than three times what it sells for!

By having this book, I now feel that I have the confidance to build my own "hot engine", knowing I have the expertise of Dennis Moore (the author)looking over my shoulder as I build it!

Definately a must have!!

The straight story on marine engines.
Dennis Moore has put together a clear, concise and very complete guide to building up a marine performance engine. Whether you plan to put together a very high performance motor or just make improvements to your stock motor, this book has the bases covered.

He has clear descriptions on the differences between automotive and marine engines, and details which components work best for the marine powerplant and why.

The background information he provides clears up many myths and also details how certain common practices came about and why they should or should not have a place in building up a small block.

The material is well organized and easy to navigate through.

I am currently bulding up a 350 for my boat, and this book has given me all the information I need to make the correct choices on parts and talk intelligently with the machine shops.

The Soul of the Law
Published in Hardcover by Harper Collins - UK (May, 1994)
Authors: Benjamin Sells and Thomas Moore
Average review score:

Is Sanity Possible in a Profession Gone Insane?
A must read for lawyers and law students. Wow! I first read Benjamin Sell's extraordinarily crafted "Soul of the Law" -- part anthropological study, part social commentary, part psychological self-help book -- as a young lawyer fresh out of a judicial clerkship, while searching for a firm job. It blew me away! What a grim portrait of the legal profession; of lawyers; of our legal system. Grim...Yes. But very telling! Had I read this book prior to enrolling in law school, I probably would never have went. With three years of my life invested, and a hundred-or-so grand in education loans to pay back, I deduced that I had no choice but to land that firm job. But the lawyer of today does not have to let his career consume him, the book ultimately teaches us. Purpose and fullfilment are, believe it or not, out there...maybe. "Soul of the Law" conjures the queries: Is it the dysfunctional profession that breeds dysfunctional lawyers, or did the egg come before the chicken? How do these undeniable professional dysfunctions impact the American justice system? Is the profession on a slippery slope to hell, or is there hope? Can a lawyer today lead a quiet, normal, happy life in spite of the profession's dysfunctions? If you're a lawyer, real "Soul of the Law". You'll relate! If you're a law student or a candidate for law school, you'll run for cover!

Best insight into the law and being a lawyer
This book is a must read for anyone who ever contemplates the law or being a lawyer. Especially for anyone thinking about attending law school! Sells, along with Thomas Moore, relates the imaginative language of Archetypal Psychology to the mainstream in this insightful discourse.

It identifies a long needed soulful review of the Law's soul
A timely contribution to the Law. Without soul we are nothing. The pain and loss many lawyers are confronting and the open hostility in the law by consumers has to change. This work is a start of a journey to renew the law's soul. Best Practice may be the bridge between the lawyer and the consumer thereby helping to heal the soul of the law? I would welcome comment on this point.

Speaking Our Truth: Voices of Courage and Healing for Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse
Published in Paperback by Perennial Press (January, 1995)
Authors: Neal King and Thomas Moore
Average review score:

Moved me beyond sexism
I loved this book. Nothing so far that I have read by or about men has moved me beyond my own sexism like the vulnerability that allowed me to touch the hearts and souls of the men who wrote the words in this book. It was this book that caused me to look beyond the feminist agenda to incorporate the amazing number of boys who have been sexually abused. You won't find statistics in this book. But it will make you want to look for them. Boy children are no safer than girl children in this world. Until we *get* that, divide-and-conquer dynamics will keep us from ever being able to do anything about it.

Understanding the emotional experience of male sexual abuse.
'Speaking our Truth' is just that. A compilation of survivor's suffering and ultimate victory over male sexual abuse. He's given a venue to tie many different stories into common denominators that helps men to understand they are not alone in this experience. A 'must have' for survivors and their partners in recovery.

Speaking Our Truth is an eye opener
Even after I was able to start talking to a therapist about the abuse that I sufferred at the hands of a preist when I was 14 years old, I still was not able to truly accept that the abuse had actually happened to me. Neal King's collection of various men's uncensored accounts of their abuse and the feelings and descriptions of their struggles, gives any survivor of childhood abuse an opportunity to finally connect with the pain that affects every moment of our lives. When you feel like you may be ready to dance with your inner demons, this book is a perfect place to learn a few dance steps.
